Community Information The following information is provided to help people who live, work and worship near the 13.1® Atlanta course plan their drive during 7am-10:45am on Sunday, October 4, 2009. With this information, you’ll be able to see which roads will be impacted by the race and plan an alternate driving route to your destination to minimize traffic delays. Check out the following topics for detailed information about the race course, each street on the course, suggested driving directions to various sections of the course, and other logistics information.
The 13.1® Atlanta Course, Date and Time
The inaugural 13.1® Atlanta is a half marathon distance (13.1 mile) race that starts and ends on the beautiful Oglethorpe University campus beside the quadrangle. Start time is 7:13am and the finish line closes at 10:43am. After exiting the Oglethorpe campus, the runners complete a 6-mile loop south of the campus, then complete a 7-mile loop north of the campus, then return to Oglethorpe for the finish line and post-race festivities on campus. Click here to download a printable map of the race course, which shows each mile point.
The 13.1® Atlanta Street List The Street List provides detailed information for each street on the course including:
- The direction of the runners (N, S, E, W)
- Landmarks like Silver Lake, Keswick Park, and Blackburn Park
- The number of lanes and side of street reserved for the runners
- The time the first runner and last runner/walker pass each mile point, after which the runners’ lane reopens to vehicular traffic.
Notes about the Street List: Lanes not reserved for runners remain open for vehicular traffic. For instance, if a street has 2 lanes and 1 lane is reserved for the runners, the other lane remains open to vehicular traffic in its normal direction. Major streets like Peachtree, Johnson Ferry, Harts Mill, and Ashford Dunwoody have 1 lane open for vehicular traffic in each direction throughout the race.
Police officers at each traffic intersection control traffic and maintain public safety.
During the race, participants in the designated runners’ lanes have the right of way, and Police stop the runners only for an emergency vehicle to pass. Police make non-emergency traffic wait to cross the course until there is a gap in the runners, during which Police direct cars through the gap until more runners arrive. These gaps generally occur during the last third of the race when the slower runners and walkers are passing. Because runners have the right of way, drivers are advised to plan your drive to avoid crossing the course until the runners’ lane reopens. Generally, you will make better time by driving a longer distance that goes around the course, if possible, or by driving before or after the applicable street is closed to cross traffic.
